Four reports presenting findings from the Identify Survey regarding the experiences of rainbow young people with Oranga Tamariki involvement.

Background

The Identify Survey is an anonymous online survey that was available to takatāpui, MVPFAFF+, LGBTQIA+ young people, and friends and allies. It is the largest study focussed on takatāpui and rainbow young people in Aotearoa New Zealand to date.

Oranga Tamariki commissioned a series of four reports, focussed on participants who responded “yes” to the question “Have you ever been involved with Oranga Tamariki (OT) or Child, Youth and Family Services (CYFS) as a young person?”

The four Identify Survey reports commissioned by Oranga Tamariki are entitled:

  1. Identity and culture among young people with Oranga Tamariki involvement in the Identify Survey.
  2. Secondary education experiences among young people with Oranga Tamariki involvement in the Identify Survey.
  3. Identify Survey findings for young people with Oranga Tamariki involvement: Whānau, family, housing and home life report.
  4. Identify Survey findings for young people with Oranga Tamariki involvement: Health and wellbeing report.

Key findings

The reports highlight challenges and inequities faced by takatāpui and rainbow young people who reported involvement with Oranga Tamariki across a range of issues such as identity and culture, education, homelife and health and wellbeing.

Next steps

This work has helped to grow the evidence base regarding takatāpui and rainbow young people involved with Oranga Tamariki.

The evidence presented here is an important resource for the organisation as it continues to respond to the varied needs of takatāpui and rainbow children and young people that it supports across care and protection and youth justice settings.
