Te Hunga Tauwhiro i te Kura (SWiS)

Te Hunga Tauwhiro i te Kura - Social Workers in Schools (SWiS) is a primary and intermediate school-based community social work service for at-risk tamariki to improve their safety, wellbeing and educational outcomes.

SWiS overview

Te Hunga Tauwhiro i te Kura (SWiS) social workers work primarily with tamariki in years 1 to 8 (ages 5 -12).

They work in:

  • selected primary schools
  • intermediates
  • composite schools
  • kura kaupapa Māori.

Referrals need the consent of the parent or primary caregiver and can be made by:

  • the tamariki, or whānau themselves
  • the school
  • community or government agencies.

Social workers work with the most at-risk tamariki, their whānau and schools to develop plans to improve their safety, wellbeing and educational outcomes. This whānau involvement is also vital to achieving long term successful outcomes.

SWiS social workers are employed by NGOs, not the school, but they work in partnership with school kaimahi as part of the school community.
